Spot Welding

What is Spot Welding?

Spot welding is a form of resistance welding which is used to join together metal components and is extremely common in the automotive industry. Spot welding can be achieved either with a fixed pedestal welding machine, operated automatically or by a human worker, or through using a spot welding gun attached to a robot. 

Using two rounded copper electrodes, heat is conducted through them in concentrated spots around the material as the gun opens and closes. These small spots where the weld takes place is where spot welding takes its name. 

The properties of the materials being welded determine the heat and pressure needed and therefore the resistance between the two copper electrodes, hence the name ‘resistance welding’.

    Spot Welding FAQ's

    Spot welding robots work using a series of servo motors which are programmed to move the robots from point to point. Once recorded, the robot can seamlessly run through the movements. The spot welding robot is also in control of the spot welding gun.

    By automating your spot welding process you are guaranteed to increase the efficiency of your output. An automated spot welding robot can produce parts much more quickly than other means while also being consistent in its approach, making sure you get the same results each time.

    As well as spot welding, all other types of welding can be automated too, these include varieties of arc welding such as MIG, TIG and laser as well as the like of friction stir spot welding.
